ORDINARY

In this project, I present a different outlook on otherwise ordinary and disregarded items and rooms of our day-to-day lives. Using oil on canvas, I create pieces that use a monochromatic color pallet and a profound exploration of shadows and light to illustrate a specific setting that is intriguing to me.

"Hagall’s work isn't about copying the world as it is. He meticulously chooses a subject to portray and, through the art, builds a dialogue with viewers, compelling them to keep looking at the piece and seeing something ordinary in a different fashion.” Greice Rosa / Curator

THE BEACH FROM THE BUS | DIA ÚTIL

Every day in Brazil, from 8 to 9 am, I rode by the same beaches, in the same seat, in the same bus, going to the same job, taking pictures of hundreds of people who were at the beach during work hours on a business day. A project created from an internal question I posed to myself: who is really using their time to the best effect? Those at the beach or those going to work?

THE GATES OF RIO

Over time, the household iron gates, typically seen in Rio de Janeiro’s suburbs, have lost their initial friendliness and invitational side.

Now, if you look at it anthropologically, these gates stand as a symbol of the gap between racial and social classes, highlighting the distance and indifference that exists towards the lower classes. With the project, we are rescuing a historical heritage that belongs to more than 6 millions of suburban Rio de Janeiro citizens, that live in the fifty poorest neighborhoods of the city. As an artist, I encourage people to see the ordinary from a different outlook.
